582. Leenane

Near the head of Killary is the village of Leenane, an angling resort and an excellent centre for the mountain climber. North 2 1/2 miles (4 km) from Leeane, in County Mayo, is Ashelagh Waterfall. The Joyce Country, an area extending east from Leenane, to Lough Corrib and Lough Mask, takes its name from the Joyces who settled there in the thirteenth century and whose name is still common in the district.

Letterfrack is a quiet village in beautiful surroundings with fuchsia hedges demonstrating its mild climates; there is good bathing, mountain climbing and hill walking, and the village is an angling centre for the streams and loughs of the neighbourhood. Short-distance gravelled walks have been laid leading from Letterfrack to Diamond Hill (1,460 feet) giving superb views of sea, mountain and lake en route. This area is now part of the Connemara National Park covering almost 4,000 acres. A visitor centre is open throughout the year depicting various features of the park.

This tranquil countryside contains rich fine farmland. As a result it has been inhabited since prehistory, and archaeologicl remains are everywhere here. Loughrea's ecclesiastical connections stretch back through the mists of time, and continue today. In the last three years over IR5 million has been invested in the town to make it a very pleasant shopping centre. The town can boast of having the only working 'Town Moat' in Ireland. This waterfilled mediaeval moat was built in the mid-13th century. It ran directly outside the mediaeval walls, and its circuit can still be seen. Loughrea town is named after the grey lake near which it is built. It has excellent fishing and boats can be hired locally.
