586. Maam CrossMaam Cross is a meeting point of several of the roads that traverse the different parts of Connemara. The route from Oughterard to Maam Cross (10 miles/16 km) lies through countryside that presents an amazing variety of bog, moorland , lake and mountain scenery. Southward from the cross a road runs through lake-strewn moorland to Screeb Lodge and Gortmore. 589. MountbellewMountbellew is a quiet market town 45km from Galway on the N63 to Roscommon. It is situated by the River Shiven, which provides some excellent fly fishing for brown trout. The town also has a fine 18-hole golf coarse, set amongst some beautifully wooded scenery. This was once the home of the Grattan-Bellew family, famous Galway parliamentarians during the 18th and 19th centuries. Their demesne is now a delightful wooded area of forest walks and picnic areas, filled with interesting historical items.
